Tait, Archibald Campbell
(1811–82)
   Archbishop.
   Tait was born of Scottish Presbyterian parents, but after studying at Glasgow University, he went to Oxford where he conformed to the Articles of the Church of England. In 1836 he was ordained. He first came to the notice of the public when he protested against newman’s Tract 90. In 1842 he succeeded Thomas arnold as headmaster of Rugby School; he was appointed Archdeacon of Carlisle in 1848, Bishop of London in 1856 and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1868. He was known as a Broad Churchman, but, as Archbishop, he was a determined opponent of all forms of ritualism. He is remembered as a strong leader who ensured the continued existence of the Lambeth Conference, the regular ten-yearly meeting of all the Bishops of the Anglican Communion.
